Work Integrated Learning (WIL)


At the academy we ensure that students are not just prepared in our classrooms but that they are also prepared in practice. We refer to this process as Work Integrated Learning (WIL). 

Students will participate in a optional 4 week/20 day program where they will be hosted in a external workshop. During this time they will design various components and carry this design all the way through the manufacturing process. Extra cost will apply. 


Week 1: Theory

Safety:

  • Work place
  • Hand tools
  • Machinery
  • Measuring

Hand skills

  • 1. Work stations – table and vice
  • 2. Cutting tools – identify type of tooling.
  • 3. How to use tooling correctly.
  • 4. How to prepare work piece (steel)
  • 5. Types of steel – mild steel, stainless steel, brass etc.
  • 6. Measuring equipment – vernier, micrometer inside and outside etc.
  • 7. Read and understand CAD drawings
  • 8. Types of symbols – radius, diameter, inside diameters    etc.

Week 1: Practical
(Project 1, Student & Instructor)

  • Planning – read and understand CAD instructions
  • Tool box – identify tooling
  • Prepare work piece
  • De-burr – remove all sharp edges from work piece
  • Inspect work piece
  • Hand in work piece for inspection to instructor.
  • Feedback
  • Next project will be handed out if student passed

Week 2: Theory

  • Feedback of the previous week
  • Problem solving
  • Team work
  • Machinery – bench grinders , linishers, pedestal drilling machines etc.

Week 2: Practical 
(Project 2, Student & Instructor)

  • 1. Planning
  • 3. Prepare work piece
  • 2. De-burr – remove all sharp edges from work piece
  • 3. Inspect work piece
  • 4. Hand in work piece for inspection to instructor.
  • 5. Feedback
  • 6. Next project will be handed out if student passed
  • 7. Log book

Week 3 & 4: Theory

  • Feedback of the previous week
  • Safety – cutting tools and cnc machines
  • Problem solving
  • Conventional and cnc machines – milling machines and lathes
  • Difference between Milling & turning
  • CAD drawings 3D
  • Basic programming
  • Cutting tools
  • Measuring
  • Inspection

Week 3 & 4: Practical

  • Planning
  • Set up instructions
  • Prepare material (block up)
  • Load clamping system (vise)
  • Clock vice to make sure vise is straight
  • Set component (work piece)
  • Set cutting tools on work piece
  • Load cnc program
  • Machine work piece
  • De-burr
  • Inspect component (work piece)
  • Clean machine
