National Certificate: Bricklayer & Plastering N1-N3

The NATED N1-N3 Bricklayer & Plastering qualification is a qualification from Levels N1-N3 focusing on the theory of bricklayering and plastering. This qualification meets the academic requirements for you to write your trade test once you have acquired the required practical hours.  This qualification consists of one compulsory part (N1-N3 theory) and two optional practical parts, beginners level (done between N1-N3) and advanced (can be done after N3).

PART 1, N1-N3 Theory (Compulsory)


This part is compulsory. Students are required to complete all their N1-N3 theory subjects to attain their national certificate and diploma. The details of these subjects can be found under the curriculum tab. 

PART 2, Level 1 Practicals (Optional Extra)


You can complete a BEGINNER level, 1 week program of optional practical hours within your field of study. This is done just after either N1 or before N3 and you will be given a certificate and logbook of the components that you have completed.

You can complete an ADVANCED level, 1 week program of optional practical hours within your field of study. This is done just after either N4 or before N6 and you will be given a certificate and logbook of the components that you have completed.  Part 2 to be completed first.

Admission Requirements

  •  N1 Entry Requirement: Grade 9 (Std 7) Certificate with a pass in Mathematics and Physical Science OR no formal qualification required for everyone 23 years or older.

NOTE: Proceed to next level only when the previous level has been successfully completed i.e. N4 for N5, etc.

National Certificate:
  • The student will receive a national certificate form the Department of Education if all external department exams are passed. This certificate is not issued by us, but only by the department of education.

Kindly note that we reserve the right to cancel/postpone any Full Time or Part Time subjects should the minimum required student numbers not be met. This will be communicated before the commencement of studies and all effort will be made to find suitable alternatives in such a scenario.
 
It should further be noted that should we not have a sufficient number of students per subject for our Correspondence course that we reserve the right to provide the students with pre-recorded class videos and not live classes.  Students will however be able to post questions on their student portal for assistance. This will be communicated before the commencement of studies.

PART 2, Practicals Bricklayer & Plastering, 120 Hours (Optional Extra, Done On-Campus)
You can complete 3 weeks of optional practical hours within your field of study. This is done just after either N1 or before N3 and will count towards your practical hours required to write the trade test.

This program covers basic knowledge and experience for the trades of: Bricklayer, plasterer, terrazzo worker and wall tilers. It will cover the following modules:

  • Module 1: Hand Tools – uses and care: the basic and essential hand tools used within the Bricklaying & Plastering trade will be covered.
  • Module 2: Building materials – recognition: the various types of sands and stones, as well as sizes of the aggregate for different uses in the various trades will be demonstrated.
  • Module 3: Tests, including the object of such tests – site tests on materials: cleanliness of aggregates, slump tests, Portland cement tests on tensile strength and setting time will be demonstrated.
  • Module 4: Construction – including preparation, precautions and basic principles will be covered: basic setting out of structures, bonding patterns of brick work, tiled and plaster finishes.
