National Certificate: Fitter & Turner (N1-N3)

Overview

The NATED N1-N3 Fitter & Turner qualification is a qualification from Level s N1-N3 focussing on the theory of fitting and turning. This qualification meets the academic requirements for you to write your trade test once you have aquired the required practical hours. This qualification consist of one compulsory part (N1-N6 theory) and two optional practical parts, beginners level (done between N1-N3) and advanced (can be done after N3) .

PART 1, N1-N3 Theory (Compulsory)


This part is compulsory. Students are required to complete all their N1-N3 theory subjects to atain their national certificate.

PART 2, Beginner Practicals (Optional Extra)


You can complete a BEGINNER level, 1 week program of optional practical hours within your field of study. This is done just after either N1 or before N3 and you will be given a certificate and logbook of the components that you have completed. 

PART 3, Advanced Practicals (Optional Extra)


You can complete a ADVANCED level, 1 week program  of optional practical hours within your field of study. This is done just after either N4 or before N6 and you will be given a certificate and logbook of the components that you have completed.  Part 2 to be completed first.

Only 2% of all private and public TVET colleges have the facilities and capabilities to offer a practical component with their engineering studies, BUT a staggering 90% of the students that receives practical are employed.

Admission Requirements:

  • N1 Entry Requirement: Grade 9 (Std 7) Certificate with a pass in Mathematics and Physical Science OR no formal qualification for everyone 23 years or older.
  • N3 Entry Requirement: Grade 11 (Std 9) Certificate with a pass in Mathematics and Physical Science or N2.

 

  NOTE: Proceed to next level only when the previous level has been successfully completed i.e. N4 for N5, etc.

  • National Certificate: The student will receive a national certificate form the Department of Education if all external department exams are passed. This certificate is not issued by us, but only by the department of education.

Duration

  • Full Time: 1 Trimester (3 Months) Per N-Level (4 Subjects)
  • Part Time: 2 Trimesters (6 Months) Per N-Level (4 Subjects)
  • Correspondence: 2 Trimesters (6 Months) Per N-Level (4 Subjects)
  • Optional Practical: Beginners (N1-N3) 1 week/5 days, Advanced (After N3), 1 week/5 days, done between trimesters.

Kindly note that we reserve the right to cancel/postpone any Full Time or Part Time subjects should the minimum required student numbers not be met. This will be communicated before the commencement of studies and all effort will be made to find suitable alternatives in such a scenario.

 

It should further be noted that should we not have sufficient number of students per subject for our Correspondence course that we reserve the right to provide the students with pre-recorded class videos and not live classes.  Students will however be able to post questions on their student portal for assistance.  This will be communicated before the commencement of studies.

Foundational Program, 3 Days (Applicable to all students)
Workshop Health & Safety Theory: Full safety training program covering OHSA 

Basic hand tools: 

  • Use of hand tools and portable equipment applicable to specific trades
  • Portable machinery – Grinding machine / Cut-off machine / Drilling machine
  • Chisels /Hammers/Screwdrivers/Scribers/Punches/Socket Wrenches/Files/Vernier/ Callipers/Clamps
  • Measurement and marking – The application of “Marking Blue”
  • Basic Arc Welding
  • Assembly using space welding
  • Assembly using vertical welding

Applied practical hand skills:

  • Cutting of sample work pieces – Use of grinders and cut-off machine
  • Marking and measurements – Use of Vernier
  • Drilling and thread tapping – Use of centre punch and drilling sizes with wrench tapping
  • Assembly of work pieces
  • Pipe threading / Plate rolling and guillotine work

  • Specific safety rules related to operating a lathe
  • Operating techniques of a lathe
  • Tool bits for skimming / polishing

Milling Machine:

  • Specific safety rules related to operating a milling machine
  • Operating techniques of a milling machine
  • End milling / Slab milling / Fly cutting / Drilling and reaming / Boring / Slotting and Saw Milling

 


 

PART 3, Advanced Practicals Mechanical (Optional Extra, Done On-Campus)
You can complete 1 week of optional ADVANCED practical hours within your field of study. This can be done just after N3.

Lathe – Training: Lathe settings

  • Operational safety
  • Gear ratios / Tailstock / Chuck functions

  • Machining of samples

 

Lathe – Training: Screw Cutting

  • Drilling and tapping of solids bars
  • Cutting various types of materials, understand cutting speed vs finish on product surface

 

Lathe – Training: Milling Operation

  • Operational safety
  • End milling / Slab milling / Fly cutting / Drilling and reaming / Boring / Slotting and Saw milling
  • Surface depth milling and tolerances
