Overview

The NATED N1-N6 Electrical Engineering qualification covers levels N1-N6 and is designed to provide the theory of Electrical Engineering and a optional practical component. You can attain a National Certificate or Diploma once you have worked 24 months (2000 working hours) in your field of study. This qualification consist of one compulsory part (N1-N6 theory) and two optional practical parts, beginners level (done between N1-N3) and advanced (done between N4-N6) 

PART 1, N1-N6 Theory (Compulsory)


This part is compulsory. Students are required to complete all their N1-N6 theory subjects to attain their national certificate and diploma.

PART 2, Beginner Practicals (Optional Extra)


You can complete a BEGINNER level, 3 week program  of optional practical hours within your field of study. This is done just after either N1 or before N3 and will count towards your practical hours for your diploma.

PART 3, Advanced Practicals (Optional Extra)


You can complete a ADVANCED level, 3 week program  of optional practical hours within your field of study. This is done just after either N4 or before N6 and will count towards your practical hours for your diploma.

Only 2% of all private and public TVET colleges have the facilities and capabilities to offer a practical component with their engineering studies, BUT a staggering 90% of the students that receives practical are employed.

Admission Requirements:

  • N1 Entry Requirement: Grade 9 (Std 7) Certificate with a pass in Mathematics and Physical Science OR no formal qualification for everyone 23 years or older.
  • N3 Entry Requirement: Grade 11 (Std 9) Certificate with a pass in Mathematics and Physical Science or N2.
  • N4 Entry Requirement: Matric/Grade 12 (with full mathematics and science 40%+ Pass rate), or N3 Pass (with mathematics and science)

 

NOTE: Proceed to next level only when the previous level has been successfully completed i.e. N4 for N5, etc.

Qualifications

  • National Certificate: The student will receive a national certificate from the Department of Education if all external department exams are passed. This certificate is not issued by us, but only by the department of education.

 

  • National Diploma: Work for 24 months (2 years) in the Mechanical field of engineering industry obtaining relevant experience in at least two of the subjects done in N6, then apply for a National Diploma at the campus where they have studied.

Duration

  • Full Time: 1 Trimester (3 Months) Per N-Level (4 Subjects)
  • Part Time: 2 Trimesters (6 Months) Per N-Level (4 Subjects)
  • Correspondence: 2 Trimesters (6 Months) Per N-Level (4 Subjects)
  • Optional Practical: Beginners (N1-N3) 3 weeks/15 days, Advanced (N4-N6), 3 weeks/15 days, done between trimesters.

Kindly note that we reserve the right to cancel/postpone any Full Time or Part Time subjects should the minimum required student numbers not be met. This will be communicated before the commencement of studies and all effort will be made to find suitable alternatives in such a scenario.

 

It should further be noted that should we not have sufficient number of students per subject for our Correspondence course that we reserve the right to provide the students with pre-recorded class videos and not live classes.  Students will however be able to post questions on their student portal for assistance.  This will be communicated before the commencement of studies.

PART 2, Beginner Practicals Electrical, 120 Hours (Optional Extra, Done On-Campus)
You can complete 3 weeks of optional practical hours within your field of study. This is done just after either N1 or before N3 and will count towards your practical hours required to write the trade test.

This program is aimed at providing the student with the basic Electricians ability and knowledge to be equipped for an apprenticeship and be able to fit into a contractor’s environment. It will cover the following modules:

  • Module 1: Hand Tools – uses and care: the basic and essential hand tools used within the Electrical trade will be covered.
  • Module 2: Safety and First aid – safe use of hand tools, safety around electrical circuits, practical experiments on magnetism and transformers and batteries
  • Module 3: Conductor materials – recognition of conductors, cables and wire ways.
  • Module 4: Construction – basic laying out, wiring, and chasing finishes, wiring if circuits, testing of currents.
  • Module 5: Introduction into electronics – practical identifying of items like pre-set resistors, capacitors, diodes, and colour codes.

 

PART 3, Advanced Practicals Electrical, 120 Hours (Optional Extra, Done OFF-Campus)
You can complete 3 weeks of optional ADVANCED practical hours within your field of study. This is done just after either N4 or before N6 and will count towards your practical hours required to write the trade test.

  • US 9839 - Apply and maintain safety in an electrical environment, 
  • US 11954 - Design and construct a single phase circuit, 
  • US 10252 - Identify, inspect, use, maintain and care for engineering hand tools,
  • US 113877 - Understand fundamentals of electricity,
  • US 10254 - Maintain electrical distribution boards, panels and enclosures
